Dr. Lizbeth ‘Libby’ Benson of the d3center recently visited the Centre for Digital Health Interventions (CDHI) at the University of St. Gallen and ETH Zürich as part of their Digital Health Forum Guest Lecture Series. Her talk, Optimizing a Just-In-Time Adaptive Intervention for Smoking Cessation, showcased innovative approaches to using data for personalized, real-time health interventions. A recording of Benson’s talk can be found here.
Benson’s visit was sparked by a chance connection with a PhD student at CDHI, Robert Jakob, whom she first met during a brainstorming session at Susan Murphy’s lab. This led to an invitation from Dr. Tobias Kowatsch, CDHI’s Scientific Director, to present her work on just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs).
During her visit, Benson explored CDHI’s groundbreaking work, which spans ETH Zürich, the Singapore-ETH Centre, the University of Zürich, and the University of St. Gallen. CDHI’s projects cover a range of digital health technologies, from apps targeting dementia patients and asthma education to digital tools for managing non-communicable diseases. Their interdisciplinary approach, combining technology, behavioral health, and data science, resonated deeply with Benson’s research on using reflective visualizations to enhance behavioral change.
Benson and her colleagues at d3center see great potential for future collaborations, particularly in embedding real-time reflective visualizations into digital health interventions. “Seeing and reflecting on one’s own data as part of the intervention could be key to driving motivation, actionable insights, and sustained behavior change,” Benson noted.
The synergies between CDHI and the d3center promise to advance the field of digital health interventions. Both centers are committed to pushing the boundaries of how technology can support individuals in managing their health and well-being, and this visit marked an exciting step toward further collaboration.
