Description:
This presentation covers findings from a sequential multiple assignment randomized trial (SMART) investigating adaptive strategies involving clinical pharmacist-delivered medication treatments for tobacco use disorder and contingency management (CM) integrated within HIV clinics. The trial aims to optimize smoking cessation outcomes among people with HIV (PWH). Participants initially received nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), with or without CM. After 12 weeks, those not abstinent were re-randomized to either switch medication strategies or intensify CM. Results indicate that adaptive strategies using CM and NRT achieved significantly higher abstinence rates and greater reduction in cigarettes per day, suggesting that integrating CM in HIV clinical settings may effectively support smoking cessation among PWH.
